Rhino Recruitment are seeking an experienced Mechanical Inspector to oversee the construction of five newbuild transhipment shuttle vessels (TSVs) at a shipyard in China. The role focuses on supervising the design and construction process to ensure compliance with specifications, schedules, budgets, and quality standards while working collaboratively with international stakeholders.

Responsibilities:

 

  • Lead and develop Inspectors in your discipline, ensuring safe, accurate, and functional installations of all mechanical systems and equipment.
  • Supervise construction, installation, commissioning, and acceptance of mechanical systems, including self-unloading machinery, engines, hydraulics, HVAC, and more, ensuring compliance with design specifications and international standards.
  • Provide expert support for complex inspections and system optimizations during construction, sea trials, and post-delivery.
  • Maintain safety and quality throughout the process, verifying that all systems are safe, maintainable, and meet installation protocols.
  • Ensure all design changes are verified and documented, and monitor non-conformances for resolution.
  • Regularly inspect mechanical systems and recommend corrective actions where necessary.
  • Support site management with documentation, progress meetings, and environmental compliance.
  • Take corrective actions if safety hazards are identified and promote safety leadership across teams.

Quality Control:

  • Enforce quality control plans, ensuring mechanical systems meet the highest standards of workmanship and material quality.
  • Report discrepancies, collaborating with project managers to resolve issues.

Documentation and Reporting:

  • Maintain detailed inspection records, provide regular reports, and communicate progress and challenges to stakeholders.

Health, Environment, Safety & Security Compliance:

  • Lead by example in maintaining safety standards, reporting incidents, and engaging in risk assessments.
  • Monitor safety practices, collaborating with the shipyard to prevent accidents.

Continuous Improvement:

  • Provide recommendations for optimizing mechanical system installations, focusing on efficiency, quality, and cost-effectiveness.

Required Experience/Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • 10+ years of experience as a Newbuilding Supervisor in shipbuilding.
  • Extensive knowledge of self-unloading machinery, hydraulic systems, and marine battery systems.
  • Experience with ship construction in Japanese, Korean, or Chinese shipyards.
  • Familiarity with SOLAS, MARPOL, classification rules, and OCIMF requirements.
  • Proficient in inspection tools and software, and willing to stay abroad for 15 months.

Desirable Experience:

  • MSc or MBA.
  • Marine operational experience with self-unloading bulk carriers.
  • Basic understanding of Chinese preferred.

     

    Salary: Monthly salary TBC.
