Rhino become official sponsors of Natasha
Here at Rhino, we are proud to announce that we have become an official sponsor of Natasha Jonas; a professional boxer with heaps of history and potential. As the first woman to box for Great Britain at the Olympics, Natasha has recently come out of retirement and turned professional.
"The decision to leave was a harder choice. The decision to go back was a lot easier," Jonas told Sky Sports.
Excited to support her as she makes waves into the world of professional boxing, our Managing Director, Andrew Roberts says:
"Having recently sponsored Welsh talents Joe Cordina and Craig Kennedy, we found that Natasha was a brilliant campaigner for the sport, wanting to support her on her journey out of retirement. We are thrilled to be working with her and excited to be a small piece of this wonderful journey!"
Wanting to get to know Natasha a little more, we fired a few questions at the pro, and here is what she had to say!
How did you get into boxing?
I got into boxing totally by accident. I had come back injured from playing football in America on a university scholarship. The injury meant the end of my football career. After a year of doing no sports, I had put on a lot of weight and lost confidence. I met up with a lady (who became my first coach), she had just started women-only boxing sessions at a local club (Rotunda ABC) and asked me to go along. That was at 21. Six months later I was 22 and had won my first ABAE (national) title. I never looked back after that and remained at the Rotunda my whole amateur career.
What has been your toughest fight yet?
The one that meant the most was the Olympic quarter final against Katie Taylor, getting beat meant I didn't win a medal, mentally that was tough. My Olympic qualifier against a former world champion Devi (India) was physically the toughest fight. I had fought 4 times in 5 days and my body was in bits, but I hadn't qualified and needed to progress. I was 2 points down after round 1 (old scoring), 1 down after 2, level after 3, then won by 2 points. I was so exhausted at the end of the fight I wouldn't lift my arms up for my coach to take my gloves off. I'd literally gave everything. Fair play she wouldn't stop coming and pushed me to the wire.
How would you describe your fighting style?
I would describe myself as a southpaw, counter puncher, who's hard hitting and efficient.
Who would you say your biggest influences have been?
My nan, mum and dad for making me who I am. Professionally, Tanni Grey-Thompson has always been and idol of mine, not only has she achieved amazing success in her sport but she uses her influence in a positive way and now is in Parliament trying to improve the lives of disabled people in our country. For the same reasons, I admire Manny Pacquiao. All-time boxing favourite has to be Sugar Ray Robinson, but that's simply for his boxing style.
Why have you now decided to come out of retirement?
There's a massive opportunity for women boxing in Britain at the moment, we have the ability to make waves and leave a legacy for those behind us. On more of a personal note, I would love a world title or 3. To be the best is always the aim and there is no reason that's not possible.
